What 200 real reviews say about calming with sound

A netnographic read of how people already talk โ€” unprompted, in public, in their own words โ€” about using Calm, Endel and Brain.fm for anxiety, sleep and focus: what they'll pay for, what they complain about, and where "real music" and "generated soundscape" pull against each other.

Source: research/netnography/SUMMARY.md, coded from research/netnography/dataset.csv (200 rows, collected 2026-07-09) ยท Method: Kozinets, R. (2020), Netnography, Sage ยท Honest note: Reddit was completely blocked in this research session (see Gaps below) โ€” the dataset substitutes App Store, Product Hunt, a Discourse forum and Apple Community threads, disclosed rather than hidden.

/ 01Scope & method

200 rows, one blocked platform, disclosed

The protocol called for Reddit (r/Anxiety, r/sleep, r/Meditation, r/ouraring, r/AppleWatch, r/adhd) as a primary source, following Kozinets' (2020) netnography method. Reddit was completely inaccessible through every available tool in this session โ€” a scripted pull, WebSearch, and WebFetch all failed (full log in Gaps, below). No Reddit content appears in this dataset.

The 200-row dataset instead combines Apple App Store customer reviews for Calm, Endel and Brain.fm (public RSS feed, verbatim, 50 most recent per app โ€” 150 rows) with verbatim posts from other public, fetchable user-generated-content sources: Product Hunt reviews, a Discourse support forum (ditchnet.org), and Apple Community threads about Breathe-app HRV readings (50 rows). Every row carries a real URL that was actually retrieved in this session โ€” nothing was invented.

140 of the 200 rows were coded to a theme (the most relevant subset); the remaining 60 are generic, low-relevance reviews โ€” e.g. "great app" โ€” left uncoded with relevance_1to3 = 1. The 150 App Store rows were classified programmatically by a keyword-priority heuristic, one highest-priority theme per row; the 50 Product Hunt / forum / Apple Community rows were each read and coded manually. This is a pragmatic single-coder pass, not independently double-coded โ€” treat it as a research-grade first pass, flagged as a limitation throughout.

/ 02Findings

Six themes, one dominant: coping right now

Frequency of each theme among the 140 coded rows. coping_now and willingness_to_pay together account for 7 in 10 coded rows.

Theme coden (of 140 coded)% of coded rows
coping_now5640.0%
willingness_to_pay4330.7%
app_complaint117.9%
real_music_vs_soundscape117.9%
biometric_attitude107.1%
unmet_need96.4%

60 of the 200 rows (30%) were generic/low-relevance and left uncoded โ€” they are not counted in the percentages above, which are of the 140 coded rows only.

/ 03Dataset composition

Where the 200 rows came from

App Store reviews dominate the dataset by volume; Product Hunt, a forum and Apple Community threads fill in the substitute sources for the blocked Reddit angle.

/ 04Patterns

Five descriptive patterns โ€” data description only, no strategy claims

Billing friction dominates negative sentiment โ€” for Endel and Brain.fm

Of the 43 rows coded willingness_to_pay, most are complaints about auto-renewal, not being able to find or cancel the subscription inside Apple's settings, and charges that didn't match the price shown at signup. This pattern is far less prominent for Calm, where price complaints skew toward "overpriced" rather than "surprise-charged."

"coping_now" quotes name a specific mental-health function

Anxiety, panic, PTSD, grief, ADHD task paralysis โ€” reviewers self-report clinical or quasi-clinical framing inside ordinary App Store reviews, not just in dedicated health forums.

"Real music vs. generated soundscape" recurs, unresolved

Some users explicitly compare the product unfavourably to a free Spotify/YouTube playlist or a specific real song they expected to hear; others explicitly value the absence of real songs and lyrics as the point. Both positions coexist in the dataset โ€” sometimes inside the same review (liking the concept, disliking the execution).

Adverse anxiety reactions are rare but present

Two rows in the dataset describe a user experiencing increased anxiety or a panic attack they associate with using the app, alongside otherwise positive/neutral framing of the same review. Both are self-reported, uncontrolled, single-user accounts.

HRV discussion is about measurement reliability, not behaviour change

All ten biometric_attitude rows โ€” App Store and Apple Community threads โ€” concern whether or when an HRV reading is generated and how consistent it is, not what users did differently after seeing a stress/HRV score. This likely reflects the sources available (Apple's own Breathe-app support threads) rather than a general absence of behaviour-change discussion โ€” the subreddits meant to capture that angle (r/ouraring, r/AppleWatch) were not reachable in this run.

/ 05Verbatim evidence

The strongest quotes, in their own words

12 of the best verbatim quotes from the coded set, each copied exactly as retrieved โ€” no paraphrasing โ€” with its theme, source, date and the real permalink it was collected from.

"I got this app to help with my sleep. I use it every night. But I discovered a healing track and I use it as part of my mental health routine. I have found music to calm my anxiety and ease my grief. There are so many different things to try I'm sure you will find something that works for what you need."

"The layout is confusing and VERY busy. The opposite of 'calm.' There are so many pop-ups, and almost everything is hidden behind a paywall. I downloaded the app to help diminish stress, but it only made it worse. Just download Headspace."
[app_complaint] โ€” appstore_Calm, 2026-07-04 ยท source โ†—
"Unauthorized renewal charges, impossible to speak to customer service, navigate cancellation, or get refunds. Feels purposefully difficult and deceptive. Many, many complaints across the web from other customers concerning these very same issues. I do not recommend this company."
[willingness_to_pay] โ€” appstore_Calm, 2026-07-02 ยท source โ†—
"It uses a tree where you shake your phone to get things. That's like a slot machine for dopamine. It costs $119/yr It makes ADHD people spend more time on their phones instead of disconnecting. Shame. Shame."
[willingness_to_pay] โ€” appstore_Endel, 2026-06-16 ยท source โ†—
"The app and sounds are great. I have add and suffer from anxiety attacks. I haven't had one in a long time. After listening to the sounds on the first night I had an anxiety attack an hour or 2 later. If you google 8d sounds and anxiety and panic attacks, it will say that if you are sensitive to some sounds the 8d sounds can cause an attack... But the app does work with soothing and relaxing but be careful if you have had attacks before."
[coping_now] โ€” appstore_Endel, 2026-06-29 ยท source โ†—
"I downloaded this app after failing to locate a particular song from a Facebook ad. I expected the music to be playlist based with the option to choose songs but it appears to be set with the option to choose varying sound levels... Really wish I could find the one song I was looking for, seems rather catfish to use in an ad but not have available in the app."
[real_music_vs_soundscape] โ€” appstore_Endel, 2026-06-07 ยท source โ†—
"Don't think I need Apple Music anymore. This is better for my brain. I have less pain. I have less stress."
[coping_now] โ€” appstore_BrainFM, 2026-06-05 ยท source โ†—
"Very disappointed. I expected results and all it did was make me anxious. just plays random sounds based on what you pick for your music at certain BPM levels. I tired over 50 different tracks and none boasted results. Just another subscription and false clams like always, just cause you have evidence of it working on 1 or 2 people doesn't mean it works with everyone, likely won't work with most people."
[willingness_to_pay] โ€” appstore_BrainFM, 2026-06-05 ยท source โ†—
"I picked Endel because it feels alive. Most 'focus' apps just loop pretty sounds โ€” Endel actually responds to you."
[real_music_vs_soundscape] โ€” producthunt_Endel, ~2025 ยท source โ†—
"For serious anxiety, it is a small support, not a solution."
[coping_now] โ€” forum_ditchnet_Endel, 2026-03-05 ยท source โ†—
"I fall asleep faster with it. From ~25-30 min to ~15-20 min on average"

"Thanks for your response. But heart rate is not the same as Heart Rate Variability - the two types of readings are completely different"

Gaps & limitations

Disclosed, not hidden

Reddit was a hard, fully-documented block

All three access methods failed in this session: (1) a scripted pull against r//search.json returned HTTP 403 on every attempt; (2) WebSearch, both unrestricted and domain-restricted to reddit.com, returned an explicit "domain not accessible" error; (3) WebFetch against www.reddit.com and old.reddit.com both failed, as did two public Reddit-mirror ("redlib") instances. Net effect: zero Reddit content could be verified, so r/Anxiety, r/sleep, r/Meditation, r/ouraring, r/AppleWatch and r/adhd are unrepresented. This disproportionately under-represents informal, non-product "coping_now" talk and organic HRV/wearable behaviour-change discussion outside Apple's own support threads โ€” the substitutes used (Apple Community, Product Hunt, a Discourse forum) are adjacent, not equivalent.

  • Single-coder, not double-coded. The 150 App Store rows were classified by a keyword-priority heuristic rather than full manual reading; a 10-row spot-check showed reasonable but imperfect fit. The 50 non-App-Store rows were coded manually. Treat theme_code as a research-grade first pass.
  • No per-review permalink for App Store rows. Apple's public RSS feed does not expose a stable, individually-addressable URL per review, so each App Store row links to the app's live "see-all=reviews" page โ€” a real, working URL โ€” rather than a review-specific deep link, because no such deep link exists in the public feed.
  • Other sources attempted and excluded: Trustpilot (HTTP 403 on calm.com/endel.io/brain.fm pages), Google Play Store (JavaScript-rendered, no review content via WebFetch), Quora (HTTP 403), justuseapp.com (HTTP 403), Twitter/X (no individual tweets with permalinks found), and Xiaohongshu / RED (out of scope for this task's explicit Reddit + App Store instructions).
  • Product Hunt dates are approximate (e.g. ~2025), back-calculated from a relative timestamp ("2yr ago") shown on the page at fetch time (2026-07-09), and marked with ~ to flag the imprecision.
